Yummy Asian Meatballs with Hoisin Sauce! Yes please! So, the other day I was debating on what to cook with the hamburger meat I had set out. On my meal plan I had had meatloaf, but for some reason I actually wasn’t in the mood for meatloaf, neither was my son.. who by the way is a super picky eater. Lord help the parents of picky eaters, it is a daily struggle I tell you

So, I went to Pinterest like I always do to find some sort of inspiration for my debacle. I didn’t want the usual ground beef dishes we have had in the past but I also didn’t want something that was overly complicated or had a ton of ingredients. It doesn’t matter how great a recipe looks, if it has a billion and one ingredients, I won’t touch it.

I came across these Hoisin Asian Meatballs and they intrigued me, so I checked to see if I had all the ingredients…to my surprise I did! If you want the original recipe you can find it HERE, but to me the original had a bit too much Hoisin for my liking. It really overpowered the dish, so I made a few changes to the sauce.

I just love experimenting with sauces, it makes me feel like a “real” chef hehe. Every time I try a recipe, I always make the recipe as is and then I tweak it to my families’ liking. Usually, its more salt/pepper/garlic or less spice etc.. For this recipe I added a bit more meat because the 1lb it called for was just not going to feed my hungry family of 5.

Back to the recipe, I know I know you’re probably wondering why is this woman talking so much. I assure you I have a method to my madness. I just want you to know why I changed the original recipe so much and you yourself can always try both and see which one suits your fancy. I would love to hear about your experiences in the comments! Make both and let me know which one you liked better and Why. Here’s my recipe for Asian Meatballs with hoisin sauce

Ingredients

  • 1.5 lbs ground beef
  • 1 tsp toasted sesame oil you can use regular sesame oil
  • 1/2 Cup Panko bread crumbs Use Panko for best results
  • 1/4 tsp ground ginger
  • 1 egg
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 4 green onions finely chopped (plus more for garnish)
  • sesame seeds (optional for garnish) We didn't use any because my kids don't like them

For the sauce

  • 1 tbsp hoisin sauce
  • 1 tbsp rice vinegar
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1/2 tsp sesame oil or toasted sesame oil
  • 2 garlic cloves minced
  • 1/2 tsp ground ginger

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 400 and line large baking pan with either silicone baking mat or parchment paper
  • In a medium to large bowl add everything needed for meatballs and mix thoroughly with your hands ( you can use a spoon but I find it mixes better with your hands)
    Asian meatball mix
  • Roll meatballs into about 1 1/2 in balls and place on prepared baking sheet
    Asian meatballs
  • Place in oven for about 12 minutes or until all sides are browned
  • While meat balls are cooking, start making your sauce. Mix all ingredients for sauce in a small bowl or just use your measuring cup to cut back on dirty dishes 🙂
    Hoisin Sauce
  • Drizzle sauce over meat balls and garnish with green onions and sesame seeds (optional)
    Asian meatballs with hoisin sauce
  • Serve with Rice or potatoes

Notes

Panko is a Japanese bread crumb and can be found in the Asian aisle in your grocery

What can I use instead of Hoisin sauce? I know sometimes you cannot find hoisin sauce in your area so something you can use is half soy sauce plus a little bit of brown sugar. So, this recipe calls for 1 tablespoon of hoisin sauce, just use 1/2 tablespoon soy sauce and a sprinkle of brown sugar. (more if you want it sweeter)

I hope you enjoy these Asian meatballs with Hoisin sauce as much as we did. There weren’t any leftovers so I think next time I may double the recipe. Drop me a comment and let me know if you liked this version or not. I am always up for improvements and or praises!

I’ve learned that a little hoisin sauce goes a long way and you can always add more if you want more of that flavor. I’m sure this would be amazing with turkey meatballs!!Let me know if you do try it out!
